Regional Safety & Compliance Manager (11/4/08)

We have a great opportunity for a person with trucking safety experience or an insurance carrier loss control consultant with transportation and ergonomics assessment skills to be a Regional Safety & Compliance Manager in southern Ohio for the largest Truck Transport Operation in North America. Duties would include:

1. Provide regional leadership, active direction and support for all corporate safety and loss prevention issues, regulatory compliance requirements, security and environmental policies/procedures.

2. Promote safety and compliance with regulations, assuming responsibility for training drivers and other employees and monitoring the effectiveness of the training procedures.

3. Partner with the terminal managers, site safety trainers and Operations to analyze exposure and loss information in order to effectively control and prevent accidental losses in the organization.

4. Audit and analyze company/customer buildings, equipment and operations to identify unsafe conditions and hazards. Recommend and implement process changes to assist in the corrective action. Provide written reports to management to communicate the current status of audit findings and corrective actions.

5. Conduct accident and incident investigations and make recommendations for corrective action.

6. Support and develop site Safety Trainers to ensure appropriate employees safety training, regulatory compliance and cost containment.

7. Performs monthly visits to selected dealers to observe undecking safe practices.

8. Train drivers in the areas of safe driving, load handling and securement, and DOT compliance requirements

9. Work on special Safety and/or regulatory compliance related processes and projects as approved by the Director or the Customer.

Education/Skills Required:

• Minimum of 3 years working experience with safety and environmental processes, along with related regulatory compliance requirements, in a transportation work environment.

• BA/BS/AA degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial/Environmental Engineering, Industrial Technology or related disciplines highly desirable.

• Thorough knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software (preferably ADP and Microsoft Office).

• Strong working knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

• Certification designations such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP/ASP), Associate in Loss Control Management (ALCM), Certified Protection Professional (CPP), or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or related designations a plus.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

• Be able to climb into tractor truck cabs, on/under vehicles in all types of weather.
• Be able to stand on exterior surfaces for long periods of time.
• Drive cars or vans for extended periods.
• Works in a fast paced, climate controlled, nonsmoking office.
• Travel is required in the United States and Canada in the performance of job responsibilities.

Cummins Kentucky Distribution Center, located just South of Cincinnati, is seeking a dynamic leader to be the Health, Safety and Environmental Manager. This position requires a results oriented change agent who will be responsible for the following:

• Leading the organization towards its goal of achieving a working environment free of industrial injuries.
• Developing and maintaining effective safety policies, procedures, practices, and injury prevention programs.
• Developing and maintaining safety, ergonomic and industrial hygiene training programs as required by OSHA and the corporation.
• Leading health, safety and environmental processes, including workers compensation cases.
• Ensuring sites compliance with federal, state and local regulatory requirements in order to provide a safe and healthy workplace, including OSHA, EPA, Workers Compensation and Cummins Regulations.
• Coordinating activities with Cummins functional excellence leaders in areas of health, safety and the environment.
• Assisting with safety modifications and new installations of equipment and distribution/production processes
• Participating in management level meetings, task forces, and cross-functional improvement teams. Identifying organizational needs and influence strategic direction for the company.
• Serving as the EMS Management Representative by (1) ensuring that environmental management system requirements are established, implemented and maintained and (2) reporting on the performance of the environmental management system.
• Leading all HSE initiatives by developing action plans and conducting follow-up audits to address relevant site issues and adherence to applicable policies and procedures, including improvement and compliance work.
  
• Counseling employees and management in solving problems that impact the workplace.
• Promoting overall employee satisfaction through effective communication, performance review processes, and recognition practices.
• Managing the first aid and medical services personnel/operations
• Providing support to managers on safety audits, wellness programs, and ergonomic conditions.
• Performing training role for certain classes or modules.
• Treating fellow employees with dignity and respect.
• Ability to travel.'« Performing other duties as assigned by management

Experience and Education:

The successful candidate for the Health, Safety and Environmental Manager role will possess the following qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree. Professional certification a plus.
• 2-5 years Health, Safety and Environmental experience, preferably in the logistics/distribution environment.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• Good understanding of confidentiality requirements.
• Experience with supporting cross-functional teams and working in a team-based environment.
• Demonstrated commitment to professional development.
• Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated communication skills, including MS Office, Lotus Notes, spreadsheets and databases.
• Expert knowledge of governmental rules and regulations and associated requirements for documentation, interpretation, and application.
