OBJECTIVE
The mission of the American Society of Safety Engineers "Southwest Ohio Chapter", is to enhance the status
and promote the advancement of the safety profession and the safety professional; to foster the technical, scientific
and managerial knowledge and skills of safety, health, and environmental (the profession) professionals; and to
promote the technical, societal and economic well-being of safety practitioners.
GOAL
In 2005 - 2006 the Southwest Ohio Chapter of the ASSE will increase its STARS rating from its current total of
875 points to 1145 points by accomplishing the activities noted in the Chapter Acitivites, Professional Development
Communications, Governmental Affairs, Inter-Society Affairs, and ASSE Foundation workbooks. Contining activities are
noted in Green Print and activities to complete in 2005 - 2006 are noted in Blue Print and highlighted in yellow.
ASSE Southwest Ohio Chapter Scholarship
Purpose
- Seek out and encourage qualified and dedicated students to enter safety, health and environmental fields.
- Recognize and support outstanding students in safety, health and environmental programs.
- Support and enhance quality safety education programs at accredited colleges and universities.
Funding
- Annual contributions from the chapter general fund, augmented by donations from chapter members, non-members or from other sources (such as chapter members' companies)
- Designated amount awarded each year
Scholarship Guidelines
Terms
- The award will be known as the “ASSE Southwest Ohio Chapter Student Scholarship” and will be administered by the Southwest Ohio Chapter (SWOC) Scholarship Committee.
- The SWOC Scholarship Committee is elected by the SWOC Executive Committee and will include the Chapter Treasurer.
- The SWOC Student Scholarship will be administered in the following manner:
- Applications submitted by interested students by May 7
- Review of the application by the SWOC Scholarship Committee
- Selection of the recipient by the SWOC Scholarship Committee, approved by the SWOC Executive Committee, reviewed by the SWOC Student Section faculty advisor or the recipients academic advisor, and finalized by the SWOC Scholarship Committee
- The ASSE Southwest Ohio Chapter Student Scholarship fund will provide for one, one thousand dollar scholarship to students:
- enrolled in the University of Cincinnati Occupational Safety and Health Engineering program and a member of the SWOC ASSE Student Section or
- sons and daughters of members of the Southwest Ohio Chapter of the ASSE enrolled in a safety education program at an accredited college or university
- Additional awards each year will be determined by funds available
- Scholarships will be awarded and announced by June 1 each year
- The scholarship awards will be paid directly to each recipient in September for use during the academic term
- The recipient will provide a brief report to the Chairperson of the SWOC Scholarship Committee on how the award was used by December 31 of the year awarded
- If no applicant is deemed qualified during any given year, the scholarship awards will be deferred until the following year.
Criteria
- Applicants must be full-time students enrolled in the University of Cincinnati Occupational Safety and Health Engineering program and a member of the SWOC ASSE Student Section or the son / daughter of a member of the Southwest Ohio Chapter of the ASSE and enrolled in a safety program at an accredited college or university.
- Applicants must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours and be seeking a career in safety
- Applicants must possess a cumulative, overall minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Last term seniors are not eligible
- Need is a consideration in awarding a scholarship only when two or more applicants have equal qualifications
Application
Scholarship applicants are required to submit the following material by May 7 (as many of these documents in an electronic format is preferred)
- Cover letter indicating consideration for scholarship including:
- ASSE Student Section or other safety leadership activities
- Campus extra-curricular activities (especially those safety-related)
- Community or personal activities/accomplishments related to safety
- ASSE Student Section membership number or parent’s ASSE membership number
- Letter indicating career objectives in safety and explanation of how the receipt of the scholarship will aid in achieving those goals (maximum 300 words)
- Original, official graduate program transcript
- Resume
- Two safety faculty recommendations
- Verification from the University of Cincinnati Occupational Safety and Health Engineering chair or the students academic advisor that the student is officially admitted to a safety program
General Terms
Scholarship applications will be reviewed in the second week in May and recommendations determined by the Scholarship Committee. Their recommendations will be presented to the Chapter Executive Committee at the May Executive Committee meeting for award approval, the plan for review with the SWOC ASSE Student Section faculty advisor, and announcement of the recipients in June. Each applicant will be informed of the final decision.

The chairperson of the SWOC Scholarship Committee and/or the treasurer will provide scholarship activities to the SWOC Executive Committee quarterly. This will include status, amounts distributed and available, expenses, and any other information.
Information on the ASSE Southwest Ohio Chapter Student Scholarship fund will be included in its annual financial report to the ASSE.
Presentation
ASSE Southwest Ohio Chapter Student Scholarship will be presented at a campus or community meeting of the SWOC Student Section or a
Southwest Ohio Chapter of the ASSE monthly meeting. SWOC general membership, school officials and the recipient’s relatives will be invited. Appropriate publicity will be arranged.
